Rules for picking rhymes in English

1. Correct rhymes end with the “same” sound.

• — Day
• — Say
• — Slay
• — Hay

As you heard from my audio or your pronunciations, each of those words ended with the same VOWEL SOUND /ei/.

2. Rhymes may not always end with the same “letters”.

• — Through
• — True
• — Crew

RULE #3: the best rhymes have more “similar” sounds towards their end.

For example:

— What word rhymes with “LAUGH”?

• A. cough
• B. sniff
• C. scarf
• D. enough

SOLUTION:

Notice that the options all ended with the CONSONANT /f/ SOUND that “LAUGH” has.

However, look further…

• LAUGH ended with “…aff“
• cough ended with “…off“
• sniff ended with “…if“
• scarf ended with “…aff“
• enough ended with “…off“

So the best rhyme for LAUGH is “scarf” because they both have more similar sound towards their end.
